Demographic Targeting
We know how important targeting is for advertisers. The ability to accurately target the audiences advertisers want to reach means more successful ad campaigns, which for publishers means higher revenue as advertisers place higher value on more qualified traffic.
In an effort to help advertisers reach desired audiences with the greatest possible accuracy, we have collaborated with M:Metrics, a leading mobile media research authority, to conduct their first large-scale research of mobile traffic composition. This in-depth study is the first ever on-device site-centric demographic research.
This reveals the diversity of the mobile media audience available through the AdMob network of sites.I would like to share just a few of the findings from this research:
65% or two-thirds of the people who view mobile ads are in the 18-34 age group, regarded as the most elusive and lucrative media user
Numerous sites that target African-Americans have audience compositions in excess of 50% of the demographic, when the ethnic group comprises only 6.3% of the mobile population
Similar results were found for females (sites with audience composition over 60% females, versus 42% of mobile browser population) and Hispanics (sites with over 35% Hispanic composition, versus 18.5% mobile browser population), among other demographic profiles
In addition to demographic targeting, we took a close look at age composition by channel.
Overall, the data that we've collected shows the diversity of the mobile media audience, which means advertisers can reach their target audience with greater accuracy and publishers can use this data to better understand their audiences.
This demographic targeting is currently available in the US only, however we are using the data we have collected to build targeting profiles for international markets which we hope to make available shortly.

AdMob AdInsights
In July we launched our iPhone specific ad unit, leveraging core technologies of the iPhone including the iPhone "touch" technology, which tells us exactly where the user touches on the screen. This technology allows AdMob to track which words within an ad attract the most attention from users. As you can imagine, learning what appeals to users within an ad can be a very valuable insight for an advertiser. We're continuing to aggregate and analyze this data, and a few of our initial findings are below:
Part of speech is important.People click on nouns.
Nouns are 67% more likely to be clicked than verbs
Nouns are 71% more likely to be clicked than adjectives
Plural nouns are 48% more likely to be clicked than singular nouns
Proper nouns are 0.7% less likely to be clicked than non-proper nouns
Word position matters. For each position further in the copy, the word is 8.7% less likely to be clicked.
Words in the first position get clicked 8.54% of the time
Words in the second position get clicked 37.8% of the time
Words in the third position get clicked 15.2% of the time
Length makes a difference.
Words with 10 characters have 82% higher odds to be clicked than words with 6 characters
We will be able to use these types of insights to help advertisers optimize their ad copy, which is beneficial to advertisers as it means more efficient ad campaigns. This also benefits publishers as more efficient ad campaigns translates to higher revenue for publishers as advertisers place higher value on more qualified traffic.
We're hard at work on developing best practices and optimization tips. Here are a few quick tips for maximizing revenue.
Integrating Ads onto your Pages
·Place your ad high on the page. Click thru rates (CTR) are significantly higher for ads placed above the fold as users are more likely to see them. Be sure to place AdMob's site install code in a position that is visible to your users.
·Experiment with multiple ads on a page. Our best-performing publishers have placed multiple ad positions on their pages.Be sure to do so in a way that doesn't disturb the user experience. You can do this by clicking on the My Sites tab of your AdMob account and going through the "add site" process.
Ad Approval
·Auto-approve ads.Let us do the work for you.Save time and ensure that all of your inventory is filled by setting your ad moderation to Auto-Approve.If you do choose to manually approve ads, be sure to check back frequently for new ad submissions.
·Multi-ad approval. If you do manually approve ads, save time and keep ads fresh by using the new multi-ad approval functionality in the My Sites section of your AdMob account.
Ad Targeting
·Select appropriate ad categories.Keep your fill rates high and increase click thru rates by selecting only appropriate category restrictions.Users are more likely to click on ads that they haven't seen before.
·Select the correct channel. Be sure that your site is assigned to the right channel so that relevant ads are being seen by your users.
